Beethoven lived during a time of radical political change in Europe, and his only opera is consistent with his personal ideals: an admiration for heroism, personal sacrifice, of triumph against all the odds, of freedom from tyranny.In the opera, Leonore disguises herself as a man (Fidelio) to work in a jail where her husband (along with many others) has been unfairly imprisoned by a despotic governor.Beethoven transcends the fairly simplistic plot with some of his most stirring music, culminating in a rousing hymn to liberty.

Carl Orff’s 1936 setting of 24 medieval poems from a 12th-century collection has become a popular staple of the choral repertoire, not least because of the extraordinary popularity of one movement, “O Fortuna“, used in films, television series and advertisements.

O Fortune,
variable as the moon,
always dost thou wax and wane.
Detestable life,
first dost thou mistreat us,
and then, whimsically,
thou heedest our desires.
As the sun melts the ice,
so dost thou dissolve
both poverty and power.

The Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir

In 2007 the Singapore Symphony Orchestra established the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir. The SSCC was initiated with the creation of The Children’s Choir Training Programme which provides young singers aged 9 to 14 with a comprehensive initiation into the art of good singing. This includes instruction on musical literacy, musicianship and proper vocal training. After one year, the young trainees may audition for placement in the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir.
